The State of the Cookbook and where do we go from here.
Dear Soroptimist Members,
Corinne has resigned as chairwoman of the Cookbook Committee and I am chairwoman for now to
take us through the process of deciding what to do from here.
At our last committee meeting we discussed what and why things were not moving forward.
One realization from the meeting was that we never did any market research on who our market would
be and what kind of books they buy. How many tourists come to our county and how much do they
spend? Once we have our market info, we can plan and project the costs, profit potential and time line.
Another concern was a need to compare several publishers or printers costs, pros and cons of each and
compare apples with apples. Maybe it won't cost as much as we thought and we still can get a classy
book or two different formats. Once the book is done, with digital technology, it's easy to change
formats. The hard work and biggest expense is already done. There are some attractive less expensive
options to look at.
We never got bids or proposals from local graphic artists and photographers that would do the work.
Do they become the project managers of the publication, or do we? They know the lingo and the
process. What do we get and what is left for us to do to prepare the book for print?
I see trying the recipes out can lead to possible fund raising and publicity events or fun times with
friends in our homes. Then again it might be a chore.
We have $11,000 pledged. We have the support of the community from our interaction so far. If we
don't do it someone else will. Are we OK with that? What will we say when we return the pledges?
Asking for money was a big issue for many.
I am willing to chair a marketing and cost analysis committee to prepare a business plan for critique.
Once we know the true costs, we can make a better decision. The club needs to decide if we want to
pursue this information or let the project go.
Please take some time to think this over and participate in this anonymous survey. If you have any
questions please contact me. 503-889-6954 wallcraft8@gmail.com
Thank you for your precious time,
Kris Tribys
